The George W. Jenkins Center of Learning

The Learning and Career Center uses the NOVA Program (Innovative Learning Systems) as its primary training and educational tool. The program has been used in over 130 missions throughout the United States and Canada. The computer based curriculum focuses on reading and writing, English as a second language, high school diploma, GED preparation, and Testing of Adult Basic Education Certification (TABE).

The Career Center operates to assist residents build up their resume and job searching skills. Assistance in pursuing higher education at local colleges, universities, and technical institutes is also part of the career center operations.

Residents work daily toward their goal of achieving their high school diploma or GED. For residents who have completed high school, The Learning Center offers refresher courses in areas such as typing. These courses allow residents to maintain their job skills while searching for employment.

Residents are required to participate in The Learning Center during their first phase of residency, Education.  Classes are held several times a week, and must be completed before a resident can move onto the next phase of the program.

Volunteers assist staff in all areas of the learning and career center. Learning and Career Center graduates go on to pursue career training and higher education.

Nick came to Lighthouse after struggling for years with alcohol abuse and self-loathing. He had lost his mother as a teenager and gotten into a car accident that had affected his memory and learning skills. He had little motivation or hope left, but now he’s a student at Polk State College and a full-time staff member at our Brandon Family Store.
